Job Opening: Music Director of the
Civic Orchestra of New Haven

Job Title: Music Director and Principal Conductor

Reports to: Board of Directors, Civic Orchestra of New Haven

Job Summary:

The Music Director of the Civic Orchestra of New Haven is responsible for all musical and artistic decisions as they relate to the orchestra. The ideal candidate has experience conducting an adult orchestra, broad knowledge of repertoire and rehearsal strategies, and ability to act as the face of the organization. Duties include repertoire selection and program planning, weekly rehearsals, and conducting the orchestra in two or three performances per season. Additional responsibilities include attending board meetings and acting as a representative of the orchestra as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Program 2 or 3 concerts per year, including appropriate repertoire from a variety of time periods. Concerts may be collaborative in nature.

  • Plan and execute rehearsals (7–9:15 p.m. Mondays) that foster high levels of musicianship from orchestra members.

  • Develop meaningful working relationships with orchestra members as individuals and as a community.

  • Recruit and audition potential orchestra members.

  • Help publicize concerts and other events.

  • Attend monthly board meetings with the Board of Directors.

  • Represent and advocate for the orchestra in person and in writing, as assigned.

Compensation:

Compensation is in the range of $10,000 per year. Specific salary will be determined based on

applicant’s qualifications.

  • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. For full consideration, submit all materials by April 15, 2023.

  • Videos of conducting are encouraged as part of an application. Submit videos as a Google download or a YouTube link.

  • Finalists will be invited to audition in person in late April or early May.

  • In-person auditions will consist of approximately 30 minutes of rehearsing [repertoire TBA].

About the Orchestra:

The Civic Orchestra of New Haven is an adult orchestra comprised of advanced amateur and professional musicians from the Greater New Haven area. Founded in 1939, the orchestra has been a cornerstone of the New Haven arts community since its inception. CONH frequently collaborates with local choirs and soloists. The orchestra aims to further its reputation as one of New Haven’s most beloved and respected sources of classical music performances.
